I hate politics. I usually avoid political discussions and arguments at any expense, much like I would avoid punching myself in the head until I pass out. I tend to follow things related to technology (i.e. patents, litigation, etc) but not really politics in general. However, being an expat for so long, it seemed like it would be interesting to do some reading just to see what people are yapping about. I picked a few topics, stuff involving photography (one of my favorite hobbies), stuff involving climate change (which interests me) and stuff involving globalization.
I can’t believe how downright hostile the liberal crowd has become. Its one thing to carry on a coherent, civilized argument where all parties agree that the possibility of a meaningful outcome is likely. What I found most decidedly did not meet that criteria. What I found were angry people with an axe to grind and an internet connection. Sure, that’s not really news, but five years ago most people argued when they had an actual point to make, not just for the sake of processing oxygen and occupying disk space.
Sure, even reading people like ESR or RMS, you have to keep a grain of salt handy, but at least some point can be found in most of what they discuss. When it comes to software, they know what they are talking about.
The “big blogs” seem nothing more than a mirror of Fox News – propaganda, turned inside out and warmed over.
The next time someone asks me what my political orientation is, I’ll just answer “annoyed” and leave it at that. There are so many better things to worry about, which is why I remained deliberately oblivious for five years. Yet, I’ll probably get flamed just for posting this Am I suffering from some sort of delusion when expecting people who live in modern civilizations to be civil?
