The Multi Kernel Has Landed

Anyone working on, conceiving or contemplating a new operating system could spend an hour looking at Barrelfish. According to the SOSP, Barrelfish is, well, really .. a multi kernel.
Imagine a traditional monolithic kernel, per core, tied together with the sensibility and reliability of a micro kernel. Yeah, I’m still digesting it myself shortly after Martin Decky sent the link on the HelenOS development mailing list.
The same groups that brought you Xen (yes, including Microsoft research) are working on it. The code available is three clause BSD .. I’m about to install heat shields in my cranium so my brain doesn’t set my hair on fire while browsing and _really_ look at it.
If you are an OS enthusiast, its worth a look. Not quite as climatic as beetles the size of your hand being controlled by radio frequencies .. but still interesting!
I’m almost done downloading the source .. I’ll likely post on this again in the near future.
