So I committed blogger suicide, I banned Googlebot

Posted on | January 3, 2008 | 1 Comment

Google sends me (almost) nothing but spammers who hope to plant links to gain page rank. Very seldom does a Google referrer ever result in a long term user. Usually, it results in yet another spammer trying to plant links.

If I write something before the major tech sites get wind of it, I’m buried in Google’s results quickly after they regurgitate whatever it is that I wrote. What fun is that?

I’m not going to decide what goes in my blogroll based on what Google may or may not do to my listings.

Quite frankly, I’m sick of Google, so I banned their bot. This blog is a hobby, not a money maker. I’m looking forward to less SPAM as my links stop appearing in their search engine.

I write because I enjoy doing so, not to push their ads and help them to pollute the Internet that I helped to build. Adsense has created a monster, I don’t care to feed it. One single company should not have so much influence over what people do with their web sites.

Bye Google, Its been real. By the way, please ensure that I get a page rank of zero, so I can cut down on my SPAM. My PR5/4 is getting quite annoying.

From looking at logs, it seems that Googlebot does not check robots.txt on every visit.. rather every 20 – 30 visits to see if your exclusions changed.

It should be interesting to see how long it takes Googlebot to stop indexing the blog.

I’ll be happy when I have only 20 – 30 SPAM comments a day to filter through, instead of the 200-300 per day that I’ve been getting lately. Almost all of them find me via Google searching for key phrases and hitting anything with a PR5+.

If Google hides page rank (completely), I’ll allow their bot again.
